Children learning languages

People always say that it’s easier to learn a language as a child. Many people think that there’s something fundamentally different about a child’s brain which primes them for learning languages, and that we lose this ability as we grow up. But I have an alternative theory: what children really have is devotion.

Everyone in their environment is using the target language all the time, and the children’s only recourse is to learn the language themselves. Other people typically just go to a class twice a week and revert to their normal language when they’re not in class.
